Based on the stage sets that he designed in 2012 for Sebastian Hartmann's productions of Tolstoy's "War and Peace" (at Ruhrfestspiele) and Fallada's "The Drinker" (Maxim Gorki Theater, Berlin and Central-Theater, Leipzig), Baumgaertel developed two new animations and installations.
A series of charcoal and ink drawings full of strange figures and sensuous hybrid creatures leads over to a bulk of disused suitcases and the projection of the scene of a seedy nightclub district. Dirt traps and neon signs are covered with vermin and figures and shapes transform over and over again in visual delirium.
In another video, the viewer is rushed through the halls of a virtual palace to the soundtrack of Sascha Ring's band "Apparat". Baumgaertel puts his drawings and paintings in motion and uses motifs from first-person shooter games as well as quotations from modern art history.
Tilo Baumgaertel was born in Leipzig in 1972 and studied at the Academy of Visual Art, Leipzig. He has exhibited in numerous international institutions and museums such as the Saatchi Gallery, London, the Cobra Museum, Amstelveen, the Essl Collection in Klosterneuburg (Vienna) and Mass Moca, North Adams. Most recently, he was part of the "Malerei der Ungewissen Gegenden" exhibition at the Frankfurter Kunstverein.
Solo exhibitions include „Hydroplan“ at Museum der bildenden Künste in Leipzig (2002) and Kunsthalle Emden (2006).
