Over the course of 2014, the gallery will be showing an extensive series of group- and dialogue exhibitions: After "A Planetary Order", a group show with three young British artists earlier this year, we will be opening a dialogue show between Leipzig painter Franziska Holstein and Dresden sculptor Johannes Makolies on March 14th, 2014:
Holstein's new series of canvases in the same large format are based on a common geometrical pattern. Individual elements are rotated, shifted, re-combined and redesigned in color under thick layers of paint.
The serial approach from earlier collage cycles is transferred to a 16-part painting-installation in which the individual panels combine to create a large scale black and white pattern. Only the relief of stacked color and subsequently exposed passages give an idea about the tedious work process. In a series of lithographs, completely reduced to the line, the basic structures and form repertoires of Holstein's pictures are systematically analyzed.
Johannes Makolies builds straightforward, dynamic structures made of recycled steel, that are filled with all sorts of found objects, boarded in and eventually poured out with colored concrete and plaster. The position of the individual resulting surfaces to each other and the overall composition is reminiscent to architecture- and design studies. The colors and the massive abruptness of the sculptures with visible marks and occasional cracks in the material, however, reveal Makolies‘ picturesque attitude towards sculpture.
Franziska Holstein was born in Leipzig in 1978. She attended the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts, studying from 2000 to 2005 under Arno Rink. From 2005 to 2008 she was a Meisterschüler of Neo Rauch. In 2011, she held a grant from the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation. In 2012, she was attending the residency program in Colombus / Ohio followed by a 6 month residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. She was awarded with the Artprice of the Sachsen-Bank 2012 including a solo exhibition at the Leipzig Museum der Bildenden Künste.
Johannes Makolies was born in Dresden in 1979. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden from 2004 to 2010 and studied under Carl Emanuel Wolff and Eberhard Bosslet.
